Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins comes out this week, but Paramount has squeezed in one last trailer for the ninja origin story. It doesn’t offer a ton of new footage, but does lean a little more on the traumatic backstory of Snake Eyes (Henry Golding), and reminds us who Andrew Koji is actually playing: “Call me Storm Shadow,” he intones, very seriously.
While a previous trailer was a little more tailored to those of us who don’t speak fluent G.I. Joe, this one focuses a bit more about the relationship between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow—and offers a few hints as to why Snake Eyes might get himself mixed up with an ancient order of ninjas in the first place. (I mean, why not?) The praise saying it’s the best G.I. Joe movie yet might be somewhat dubious, but Snake Eyes does look like fun. Here’s the official summary:
Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins stars Henry Golding as Snake Eyes, a tenacious loner who is welcomed into an ancient Japanese clan called the Arashikage after saving the life of their heir apparent. Upon arrival in Japan, the Arashikage teach Snake Eyes the ways of the ninja warrior while also providing something he’s been longing for: a home. But, when secrets from his past are revealed, Snake Eyes’ honor and allegiance will be tested – even if that means losing the trust of those closest to him. Based on the iconic G.I. Joe character, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins also stars Andrew Koji as Storm Shadow, Úrsula Corberó as Baroness, Samara Weaving as Scarlett, Haruka Abe as Akiko, Tahehiro Hira as Kenta and Iko Uwais as Hard Master.
Snake Eyes is—in theory—the beginning of the next round of G.I. Joe media, which includes a Lady Jaye TV show and another mysterious spinoff movie. The G.I. Joe Cinematic Universe is probably not far off, depending on how well this movie does.
Snake Eyes opens in theaters this Friday, July 23rd.
